Jackson Jr. earns pair of MARS top-5 finishes on Labor Day weekend
On the last weekend in August, the Midwest Auto Racing Series (MARS) Late Model Championship made a swing through Illinois to celebrate the Labor Day holiday. Tony Jackson Jr. raced his Schlup Enterprises No. 56 Super Late Model to two top-five finishes in the weekend’s three races.
Action commenced on Friday with the Chuckwagon Food Service 40, which brought 36 MARS Late Models to the quarter-mile Farmer City Raceway. Jackson grabbed third in his heat race to transfer into the $5,000-to-win A-Main. He started ninth in the 40-lapper and climbed four spots, finishing fifth behind Ryan Unzicker, Ashton Winger, Jason Feger and Mike Spatola.
On Saturday, $10,000 was up for grabs in the Illinois Dirt Shootout at the famed Fairbury Speedway. Thirty-five MARS Late Models descended on the quarter-mile track for the event. After failing to transfer through his heat, Jackson raced from third to first in his B-Main to start 18th in the 50-lap feature. He came home 16th.
The Labor Day weekend festivities wrapped up on Sunday at Spoon River Speedway in Lewistown, Illinois, where 24 MARS Late Models were entered in the 35th annual Plowboy Nationals. Jackson set the overall quickest time in qualifying at the 3/8-mile speed plant and won his heat from the pole. He started third in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win main event and finished fourth. He followed Feger, Unzicker, and Shannon Babb under the checkered flag, with Dennis Erb Jr. taking fifth.
After the three Labor Day events, Jackson sits fourth in the MARS Late Model Championship standings.
